One Bad Mother

Biz and Theresa wonder if and how our use of the internet in relation to parenting has changed. Looking up “rash” is never a good idea, but is looking up “dangers of social media” any better? However, we also find communities and support on the wild, wild web. In a time when isolation is a real experience for parents, the internet may be the village we need. Plus Biz is all a buzz, Theresa looks back, and we talk to Katherine Goldstein of The Double Shift podcast about working mothers.

You can follow Katherine Goldstein on Twitter @KGeee. You can learn more about The Double Shift podcast and subscribe at TheDoubleShift.com. Season One is available now wherever you download podcasts.

Biz and Theresa explore the limits of our power as parents. Kids have pretty big ideas about what we can do and it's a life lesson learned that we can’t take them to Ancient Egypt to dine with cats. But what about the more realistic needs and wishes we can’t meet, like that must have outfit, guitar lessons, or that birthday gift they really want? How does all this crushing disappointment make us feel? Hint: Not the best. Plus, nature comes to Biz, Theresa has too much on her brain and we talk to clinical psychologist Darcy Lockman about the Myth of Equal Partnership. It's a doozy of a show.

Follow Dr. Darcy Lockman on Twitter @Darcy_Lockman and on her website Darcylockman.com. Her book All The Rage: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership is available now.

Biz and Theresa confess to fantasizing about receiving a minor injury in order to get a break, but that quickly dissolves into a conversation about how fucked up that is. Is it actually worse to ask, or gasp…tell the people in our lives we need a real break than breaking a leg? Plus Biz thanks social media, Theresa discovers that at the end of the tunnel there’s more tunnel, and we talk to Nidhi Chanani about her debut graphic novel Pashmina.

Biz and Theresa wonder, if a parent talks in the kitchen, does anybody hear them? We realize that no matter how much we burn energy telling our kids important information about the day’s schedule or expectations, our kids aren’t listening. “You didn’t tell me!” and “I didn’t hear you!” abound! Plus Biz is back and bored, Theresa gets impulsive and we welcome back Nefertiti Austin to talk about her new memoir Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender and Parenting In America.

Biz and Theresa pick up where we left off on last week’s show and explore the sensation of “playing self” instead of being a self. Is the book on my nightstand going to be read or is it a prop to create the illusion of self care? What about that gym membership? Does it really count as self care if we can never go? We put things in calendars, we tell our partners and family it is important and everyone agrees. Then our self care is the first thing to go when something comes up. Why is this so incredibly hard? Plus Biz finds the pen is mightier than the sword and Theresa cuts it back.

Biz and Theresa ponder the growing sensation that it feels like we work here but it doesn’t feel like we live here. “Here” meaning any state of existence where we can stop thinking about everything and everyone’s needs but our own. Plus, Biz reads aloud, Theresa receives a pleasant surprise, and we talk to Elizabeth Gilbert about her new book, City of Girls, and about the impossible expectations we place on mothers.

Biz and Theresa revisit sleep. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…huh?…..We’re awake! But are we rested? HA HA HA! How has sleep changed now that our kids are older and we have more kids? Even though it is no longer like the early days of "having an infant" lack of sleep, sleep is still important. Can we ever get enough or is every wake up like pulling back the pebble that releases the flood? Plus Biz is reminded that kid parties make her feel bad and Theresa takes her kids to a conference.

Biz and Theresa are back together again and wonder why we feel like vending machines. Maybe it's because we spend all day being the giver and taker-away of all good things. A child will relentlessly ask for stuff and we have to say "no" so many times a day, then occasionally we say "yes" because we're tired of saying "no!" Then saying "yes" opens many new terrible doors (When! Now? Now? Now?) and the "yes" just feeds this fire. It perpetuates the idea that we are the providers and they should keep constantly asking for things because sometimes we'll say "yes." And now the machine has eaten my dollar! GIVE ME MY NUTTER BUTTERS! Plus Biz shares some science, Theresa is all signed up for camp and we welcome back Lisa Kenney of Gender Spectrum to talk about the importance of incorporating gender inclusive materials into schools’ existing puberty and health education curricula.

To learn more about Gender Spectrum, go to genderspectrum.org. You can find their Principles for Gender-Inclusive Puberty and Health Education online at genderspectrum.org/blog/gender-inclusive-puberty-and-health-education. Biz and Theresa are packing our bags for Camp Mom! Camp Mom…an exciting opportunity to save money and spend quality time with your children! It's as easy as staying up after the kids go to bed and outlining a syllabus of science, art, and movement activities that children of any age and any interest level will totally be into. Don’t forget meals! Be it Mom, Dad, a sitter, a grandparent or the dog next door, the counselor is in and doesn’t want talking after lights out. Plus Biz gets parenting tips and Theresa has a reminder.

Biz and Theresa explore the pros and cons of our kids sharing good news with each other. “I know you got a goody bag at the party but how about you don’t tell your brother?” “I am so proud of you for your hard work on your project. You deserved the prize you got. Don’t tell your brother!” How do we find the balance of celebrating good news with our kids while avoiding the jealousy and greed that often follow? Plus Biz tells it like it is, Theresa isn’t going to pack a snack and we talk to trans and queer artist Noah Grigni, illustrator of Theresa’s new book It Feels Good To Be Yourself.

Biz and Theresa revisit board games and card games and delve into the ethical questions and lessons that arise. Do I let my kid win? If they realize they made a mistake, do I let them have a “do over” during the game? Do I teach one child to let another child win? There isn’t always an easy answer…it’s just how the game is played. (Boom!) Plus Biz can see Katy Belle is about done, Theresa’s village gets a new job and we talk to Dana B. Myers about reigniting some intimacy in our lives.

Biz and Theresa wonder if we can still claim Superbrain or if our brains are just broken now from all the continuous input. Is it a “natural” result to feel like we are failing at many things because our brains are learning so many new things? Plus, Biz has nothing to talk about and Theresa has a mother’s day report.

Biz and Theresa wonder if we should stand up for our partners when our kids show a preference for us. “I don’t want Papa to take me!” “I love Mama more, it's just a fact.” We get that this is developmental in many ways but maybe, on those dark days, our resentment might cloud our response. “Well, of course they love me more, I’m president of everything!” Oops. Maybe we are the jerk. Plus Biz gets scarred for life, Theresa does not know when to hold ‘em, and we welcome back graphic novelist Lucy Knisley to talk about her new graphic memoir Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos.

Biz and Theresa pat ourselves on the back for past parenting decisions only to realize that now, we’re not sure those choices were right. “They are just clothes. I won’t be mad if you play in them and they get dirty.” Fast forward a month….(internal monologue) “Am I ok with her wearing THAT while playing in mud?” Do we speak up or cram it down and seethe? Plus Biz ate that bunny, Theresa isn’t nice about Easter and we talk to Zibby Owens of the popular podcast, "Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books."

Biz and Theresa wonder how long we should let something go on that our kids are doing. It's easy enough to say “okay” to our child’s collection of rocks, but when are there too many rocks? At what point do we draw the line? Do we worry that peers will think our kids are weird or is it just about our personal comfort level? Plus Biz thinks some games are weird, Theresa takes a break and we welcome back Courtney Wyckoff, founder of MommaStrong.

To hear Courtney on previous One Bad Mother episodes, check out episodes 143 and 165.

Biz and Theresa get stuck holding the bag…and the water bottles, and the half eaten sandwich, and the “art” and the toddler. Where in all those parenting books did it warn us that there would be so much carrying? Perhaps it's less about the stuff and more about feeling like a haggard and broken coat rack left outside? Yeah, probably. Plus, Biz does not know, Theresa gets a clue, and we are beyond psyched to have Judy Greer (Married, Archer, Let's Go Luna!, Ask the StoryBots, and soooo many more) on the show this week, talking about being a step-mom and so much more.

This is Week One of the #MaxFunDrive and you can join or upgrade your membership and get awesome thank-you gifts at maximumfun.org/donate -- AND WE THANK YOU.

Biz and Theresa discuss family scheduling. Once all of the basics are set, like school/daycare drop offs and pick ups, work, doctor appointments and groceries, adding extra activities like classes and play dates is enough to make us want to go out for milk and never come home. Whether our kids thrive on doing many activities or we subscribe to “not over-scheduling kids,” a lot of brain space is taken up just by getting everyone where they need to be. Don’t forget to schedule time to do the scheduling! Plus, Biz is quarantined, Theresa is left to pick up all the pieces and we talk to Jennifer Traig about the absurdity of parenting norms, and her book, Act Natural: A Cultural History of Misadventures in Parenting.

Jennifer Traig’s book, Act Natural: A Cultural History of Misadventures in Parenting, is out now.

Biz and Theresa discuss being emotional sponges. Even if totally stationary, we are somehow able to reach maximum absorption. So how does one go about getting a good squeezing? How can a parent tell when to step back and when to step in when our kids are riding an emotional roller coaster? Plus Biz was reminded parents exist and Theresa won’t carry that load.

Biz and Theresa try to answer the question posed by many kids looking to have more freedom, “What’s a kid gotta do to get mature around here?” We often tell our kids that when they are “more mature” they will get more responsibility, but what does that mean exactly? Plus Biz was there, Theresa leans into Netflix and everyone gets rilled up about parental inequality with guest Amy Westervelt, author of Forget “Having It All”: How America Messed Up Motherhood— and How to Fix it.

Biz and Theresa discuss how confident we feel in our parenting choices…that is until someone else is suddenly there, watching! Maybe it's at the dinner table or in the car, we have worked hard to make these places the perfect balance of controlled chaos with minimal amounts of soul sucking. It works! It makes sense! Then a friend or relative comes to visit and even if they say nothing, their presence alone can suddenly makes us feel like a weirdo. Great! Plus Biz has a new insight, Theresa wakes up on the job and we talk to Mary DeMocker about her new book The Parents’ Guide to Climate Revolution: 100 Ways to Build a Fossil-Free Future, Raise Empowered Kids, and Still Get a Good Night’s Sleep.

Biz and Theresa try to define “mom hair.” Simple? Practical? Low maintenance? Inevitable disappointment when it doesn’t make us look like we don’t have kids? We can agree that calling it “mom hair” is just another way to insult moms. Plus Biz makes a discovery and Theresa is getting really good at this…still.

Biz and Theresa are hearing a lot of the phrase: I want it! What do we say to our kids when they have a "case of the gimmes" or are constantly telling us about all the stuff they want? In theory, a simple, “No, you can’t have that,” should be enough…but when is that ever enough? It's exhausting and annoying and giving in would be easy…sooooooo easy, but there is probably a life lesson our kids need to learn. Ugh! Can we hide in the bathroom while telling our children no? Plus Biz has a wish, Theresa is gearing up and we talk to Kate Schatz about her latest book Rad Girls Can.

Biz and Theresa ask the big question…is there anything we like doing together as a family? Togetherness, a word that goes hand in hand with family and yet, in practice, seems hard to achieve (unless you count everyone sleeping in the same house as togetherness). Is there a small window where we all like doing the same thing or is the secret in accepting that there is no perfect togetherness scenario? Plus Biz gives an update on feeding her kids, Theresa is a great mom and we talk to Manoush Zomorodi & Jen Poyant of ZigZag.

Biz and Theresa explore our feelings about being the designated Finder of Things at home. How can we help our kids learn to keep track of their own sh*t? Especially when we’ve probably secretly thrown at least 25% of it in the trash when they weren’t looking? Whoops! Plus, Biz has a case of the mummies and Theresa misses routine. Happy Holidays! We’ll be back the first week of January with a very special holiday genius-fail spectacular.

Biz and Theresa ponder the question, “Would we want another parent to tell us if our kid was being not-so-great?” On the flip side, when should we speak up as a truly concerned member of “the village” and when should we trust that the parents already know and just stay out of it? Plus, Biz says something bad, Theresa remembered sleep is good, and we talk to author KJ Dell’Antonia about being a happier parent.

Biz and Theresa make a shocking discovery…there is living with kids and then there is parenting and they require totally different skill sets! Once this has been realized, the struggles we face make a lot more sense. It is WAY easier to parent when you are alone and living with people is challenging. Is it that parenting is hard or is it that living with kids MAKES it hard? Regardless, it's one more thing to add to the list of things we are all doing a good job with. Plus Biz questions the motivation behind some Thanksgiving books, Theresa is still in the fog and we talk to Alli Harper, founder of OurShelves, a diverse children's book box service and advocacy effort.

Biz and Theresa face the hard question many women may find themselves needing to answer around the holidays: “Am I supposed to want a vacuum for Christmas?” Gift circulars that advertise gifts for the whole family suggest that kids want toys, dad needs a new television or gaming console to escape the noise, and then there is a picture of a vacuum. Now, who could that be for? Are we supposed to only want gifts that can support the family in a practical way? Similarly to how we feel paralyzed on the rare occasion that we have free time, moms can find it equally hard to know what to ask for in terms of a gift we might really like that is solely for us. Despite what commercials might say, it’s probably not a vacuum…whatever “vacuum” means to you. Plus, Biz and Theresa can’t remember anything and think maybe it’s a good sign!

Biz and Theresa take another look at the emotional land mines that lurk around every corner with kids. Everything going well? Wonderful! Wait! Is that a tomato on their dinner plate? RUN!!! It's hard to be on the receiving end of a meltdown by a child who is still developmentally figuring it all out. It also feels bad to live in a constant state of trying to predict the future in order to avoid meltdowns all together. Maybe it's just hard all around and hiding in the bathroom is the way to go. It is almost Thanksgiving! Plus Biz would like less inspiration, Theresa’s ears hurt and we talk to author Libby Babbott-Klein about her new book, Baby Feminists.

Biz and Theresa are looking for a last minute miracle! “Parent! It's crazy dress like a historical figure pajama day today. What can I wear?” “Parent! I’m going on a field trip today! Here is my permission slip…oh and I need a lunch in a paper sack.” “Parent! My teacher said they emailed you many times to order my class shirt. Did you do it? I have to wear it today.” Do we let them suffer through this “learning moment” or help them “make it work?” Whether it is our fault for being unable to juggle one more thing, or our kid’s fault for waiting until Sunday night to tell us they need something for Monday morning, the real lesson will be teaching our children they can probably bullshit their way through anything last minute! Plus Biz is better with kids, Theresa opens a new chapter and we talk to Beth Newell, the co-founder of The Reductress and host of the podcast We Knows Parenting.

Biz and Theresa discuss the line between performer and parent. When our kids respond to one of our jokes like it's Shakespeare, it feels really good! Is this rewarding feeling just the performer coming out in us or is it something else? It's probably “something else” and it's debatably unhealthy, but the show must go on! Plus Biz has something new to love, Theresa likes Halloween this year and we talk to Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore about kid nightmares.

You can find find Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore on Twitter @psychauthormom or on her website Eileenkennedymoore.com. Her website for kids about friendship is Drfriendtastic.com, and her blog is Psychologytoday.com/us/blog/growing-friendships.

Biz and Theresa clarify for the record that no, we can’t read minds! Sadly, our kids refuse to believe it. Being blamed for not being able to predict what kids want is frustrating and helping kids navigate their disappointment is unrewarding. If only our kids were the mind readers! Wait, then they’d know parents don’t always love being parents. Plus Biz juggles plates, Theresa has an announcement and we welcome back Recommendations Librarian Gwen Glazer of the New York Public Library to talk spooky books!

You can find more from Gwen on Twitter @NYPLRecommends or at NYPL.org/books-music-movies/recommends. You can also hear Gwen on her podcast The Librarian Is In and on One Bad Mother episodes 163 and 195!

Finally we have Adrianne Jubilee from the Center for Adoption Support and Education.

Biz and Theresa wonder if we make better decisions for ourselves now that we are parents. Do our choices get more thoughtful? Or are we more likely to make rushed in-the-moment decisions? Biz’s haircut says “in the moment” and suggests that might not be a good decision making process for her. Plus Biz is crossing her words, Theresa compliments a fellow OBM, and we talk to Dr. Krista Lauer about LICE! Yep, lice.

Biz and Theresa ponder the often tossed around phrase “You’ll miss these years when they are gone!” We wonder, how helpful is that really? Signs point to “less helpful” as we discuss how dismissive it is of our present difficulties. Is anyone suggesting that by forcing ourselves to find every moment magical or by never acknowledging how hard parenting is, that we will somehow get to skip the heartbreak when our kids get older and don’t need us as much? No! That's not a real thing. So why suggest it? Let's just all agree both the present and the future as parents will be hard for totally different reasons and show both some respect! Plus Biz is never alone, Theresa brought donuts, and we talk to Janet Manley about "Trying," Romper’s digital series that follows five women’s attempts to conceive.

Janet is on Twitter @janetmanley, and you can read Romper's digital issue "Trying" at romper.com/the-tryers.

Biz and Theresa discuss the power of the phrase “calm down.” Yes, we want our kids to calm down, but why does it trigger gross feelings from our own childhoods? Is it just the easiest thing to say when kids are too loud or too hyped or too upset? Yes. It is. Plus Biz gets a compliment, Theresa does do nights, and we talk to Debra Hauser with Advocates For Youth about the future of sex education and the new site Amaze.org.

Biz and Theresa realize maybe we have never left “the forest” and that the forest has been tricking us this whole time into believing it's a nice place! We look at the sometimes insane and always exhausting techniques that we implement in order to get our kids to do things. As we jump though hoops everyday to get our kids to function, we can't help but wonder, "Is this just my life now?" and “Is it ever going to get better?” Well shit, maybe it won’t. Also on this happy show, Biz has a worst first and Theresa doesn’t do mornings.

Biz and Theresa take a look at the highs and lows of lemonade stands and other childhood financial endeavors. The first clue that a child might not understand monetary value is when they want to charge $100 for a rock. On the one hand, we want to encourage creativity and foster an understanding of money and business in our kids. On the other hand, we will probably spend the whole day manning the lemonade stand, or wind up with a drawer full of "art" that we purchased from our own child. Plus Biz gets medieval on your ass, Theresa prepares for school, and we talk to Josh Hamilton from the movie Eighth Grade.

You can find out more about Josh’s work on his website Joshhamilton.homestead.com. His new film Eighth Grade is in theaters now.

Biz and Theresa wonder what is up with pirates? Real pirates are known for theft and murder, but every other kid has a pirate costume. (And, let's face it, they're adorable.) From swordplay to walking the plank...I guess we're all culturally cool with our kids admiring and identifying with this one particular violent and morally-corrupt lifestyle. LOL! But yeah honestly we're fine with it, guys. Getting a group of kids to yell "ARRRRRRGH!" never gets old. Plus, Biz kisses camp goodbye, Theresa masters the morning, and we talk to Angela Garbes about her new book Like a Mother, A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy.

You can find more from Angela Garbes on Twitter @agarbes or on her website at Angelagarbes.com. Her article on breast milk is "The More I Learn About Breast Milk, the More Amazed I Am." Her book Like a Mother: A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy is out now.

Biz and Theresa explore the complicated nature of receiving gifts from our children, from edible treats to physical affection to artistic renderings. How do we celebrate these occasionally misguided and even off-putting but nonetheless heartfelt gifts without sacrificing...oh, I don't know, our human dignity? HA! Are we really required to eat the thing that the 4 year old is calling "pancakes?" Biz and Theresa talk about how it feels when our kids express their feelings or needs in an unkind manner. “I hate forks!” “AHHHH! I put the shirt on before underpants!” “My day is ruined! You are ruining my day!” Helping our kids navigate their emotions and teaching them to speak their needs kindly is important, but also tiring. When you add to it the emotional pummeling of being yelled at by a four-year-old, Biz and Theresa wonder how we can ever get space to regulate our own feelings. Plus, Biz says goodbye to Steve, Theresa has a pet peeve, and we talk to author Tim J. Myers about fatherhood.

You can find more from Tim J. Meyers on his website Timmyersstorysong.com. His book Glad to be Dad: A Call to Fatherhood is out now.

Biz’s four-year-old still eats only a handful of things and Theresa’s four-year-old still has sleep problems. We've treated these issues as though they'll inevitably resolve on their own over time, but two years later we're beginning to wonder if maybe our kids won’t, in fact, “grow out of it.” (Insert horror music!) Plus, Biz is back from Bama, Theresa  remembers that toddlers are hard, and we talk to author Jill Castle about feeding our kids and her new book Fearless Feeding.

You can find more from Jill Castle on her website Jillcastle.com or on twitter @pediRD. Her book Fearless Feeding is out now.

Biz and Theresa are live from Chicago! This is the second of two episodes recorded in May at GMan Tavern. Chicago Tribune lifestyle writer Heidi Stevens joins us to talk about interrupting and help us try to figure out how to teach our kids not to interrupt. Since that probably won’t happen, we may as well just go ahead and never try to have a normal adult conversation again. Problem solved! Plus, live genius and fails!

You can find Heidi on twitter @HeidiStevens13 or read her column for the Chicago Tribune, the Balancing Act, at Chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/stevens.

How can we help our kids navigate what is acceptable and what isn’t when it comes to passing gas, especially when the biggest challenge is how hilarious it is? Plus Biz is crazy in Alabama, Theresa wrote a book, and we talk to Doree Shafrir and Kate Spencer from the Forever 35 podcast.

This week on One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa dive into the good and bad memories of swimming as kids and look at how those experiences play into what we want for our kids. Should we throw them in, or respect their complete fear of wet hair? What if they aren't the water babies we'd hoped they'd be? What if they never know the joy of Marco Polo or Martha Washington hairstyles? Plus Biz is hosting podcast summer camp, Theresa is excited for the summer, and Katy Belle drops by to give opinions.

Biz and Theresa explore our desire to prove to others that we’re doing enough as parents. Regardless of what we’re going through with our kids, when someone tries to be helpful by saying, “Have you tried...xyz?” it can leave us feeling like all our efforts are invisible. So...that’s a thing! Plus, Biz wonders “Who those people are?,” Theresa has been shocked, and we speak with author Rumaan Alam about his new novel That Kind Of Mother.

Biz and Theresa wonder what "nagging" really is. Do we just want to keep our kids happy and comfortable or is “nagging” just another word used to belittle women? We know that developmentally kids need help remembering what they need, from keeping hands clean to dressing for the weather to staying safe. But at what point do we need to let go and hope they learn on their own from experiencing discomfort? Hint: NEVER! Plus Biz has a Bad Reputation, Theresa accepts some stuff, and we talk to Kate Rope about the importance of mental health as part of more traditional things to expect when you are expecting in her new book Strong As A Mother.

Biz and Theresa are live from the GMan Tavern in Chicago with special guest comic creator Lucy Knisley, and we want to know what makes a bad influence. Rock 'n' Roll? Video Games? That one kid with the sailor mouth? Captain Underpants? Do we ban it all to make life easier or is this really about us wanting to get rid of something we find annoying rather than dangerous. Whichever it is, we should definitely overthink it. Plus, live genius and fails!

Thanks to everyone who supported us in this years Max Fun Drive!

Biz and Theresa fill our own boredom by talking about what to do when our kids are bored. Should we bust that boredom with 10 exciting ways to fill up summer break or just threaten to take their toys away if they are so bored? Both probably will have some sort of effect. The real question is how does it make us feel when we hear those 2 words, “I’m Bored,” from our kids? Plus Biz and Theresa never get bored of saying thank you to our listeners and supporters, and we talk to Shayna Ferm and Tracey Tee of the Pump and Dump Show about their new book Parentally IncorrectTrue Tales by Real Moms About the F**cked Up Things Their Kids Have Done.

Find out if the Pump and Dump show is coming to your town (they probably are) by visiting their website. Find them on Instagram @thepumpanddumpshow and on Twitter @thepumpanddump, and on their Facebook page AwestruckTV. Their book Parentally Incorrect. True Tales about the F**ked Up Things Their Kids Have Done is on sale now.

Chicago! We added another LIVE show at GMan Tavern on FRIDAY, May 11th at 8:00 p.m.! Tickets on sale now!

Biz and Theresa explore the art of bragging and decide this is a tough one. How can we teach our kids to have pride in their accomplishments while being mindful of the feelings of others? Instead of slapping the label “bragging” on it and walking away, what if we start with the lesson of being gracious towards others? Crap! That sounds like work! Plus, Biz brags about her garden, Theresa brags about her sick baby, and we get some information and resources about childhood stuttering from philanthropist and educator Jane Fraser.

Head to the Stuttering Foundation of America to find out more information about stuttering, Jane Fraser, and to download some of their awesome FREE resources. You can also follow the Stuttering Foundation on Twitter @stutteringfdn.

Biz and Theresa talk about how hard it is to watch our children deal with big disappointments, like missing their first sleepover because they’re sick! Not only do we want to comfort them, it also brings up our own crushing memories… “Mama! Why did you not buy me those Monkees tickets!!! WHY!!!??” The good news is this feels like a parenting situation we can handle. If we survived, it probably means our kids will too (…unless it’s Monkees tickets). Plus, Biz wonders if it’s real and Theresa is in a hell of her own making. Eek! This is not our most uplifting episode! But, we’re getting really good at this.

Don’t hang up yet, you’re just on hold! Biz and Theresa wonder if putting things on hold until [fill in the blank] is a good thing, and if perhaps it's better to just let some things go so that we can return to them when we're ready. Let's hold off on answering that. Plus, Biz is in the moment but not in the zone, Theresa says, "I’ll do it myself!" and we talk to award-winning children's book author and illustrator Airlie Anderson about her new book, Neither, which is a beautiful celebration of diversity and inclusion.

Biz and Theresa are in situations we'd only witnessed and judged in our pre-kid lives and are wondering, "How did we get here?" It's like the fog is clearing and once we can see everything we discover that we have no idea where we are. Are we “here” forever or is this just a stop on the road? Why is sleep the one issue that when our kids are having trouble, it feels like we are the ones with the problem? And how do we help older kids who suddenly won’t sleep through the night? Plus Biz works the streets, Theresa is someone, and sleep expert Dr. Jodi Mindell comes back to talk about sleep issues for older kids.

Biz and Theresa explore the saying, "Parenting is the toughest job, but also the most rewarding." What are those rewards and why don't they feel like finding a $20 bill in the couch? Is it that the language of “rewards” is misleading? Is it a long game? Is it that there are times when we are in too deep to see them? It may be all or none of these, but what might help is a trophy that says, “Reward.” I’ll take 20. Plus, Theresa has a one-year-old and Biz tries to adopt a new pet.

Biz and Theresa wonder, “Where do party favors go to die?” The answer? Your house. Kids love them, we hate them, and we admit to fully participating in the madness by buying them and giving them out at our own kids' parties. Maybe giving kids $1 when they leave the party is the cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to go! Plus, Biz lets go of something big, Theresa gives herself the silent treatment, and we talk with comedian and host of NPR’s Ask Me Another, Ophira Eisenberg, about having a baby later in life and letting the truths we set for ourselves be changeable.

You can catch Ophira's hilarious NPR show Ask Me Another every Friday. Don't forget to follow her on Twitter@OphiraE and definitely go watch her standup special Inside Joke.

Biz and Theresa are live from San Francisco Sketchfest with guest Eliza Skinner and we're talking about swear words! Our bread and butter! I guess maybe it's weird to hear a four-year-old sound like a sailor at the preschool interview? OOPS. Are some words just bad, is it more about how our kids reflect back on us, or is it just important that kids at least understand what they're saying and the effect their words might have on others? Maybe a little of all of the above. Plus, we enjoy some delightful audience genius and fails, and, of course, a collective listen to a mom having a breakdown.

Eliza Skinner is an excellent twitter person. You can watch Drop The Mic on TBS every Tuesday at 10 p.m. And don't forget to check out her awesome new podcast Cool Playlist where she invites a guest on to make a playlist for a specific life event. First episode to launch on January 30th!

Biz and Theresa wonder if there is anything to birth order as a determining factor in our personalities or if it's basically as reliable as astrological horoscopes? Does being the second child mean we shouldn’t leave the house today or make new investments? Yes, yes, it does. Actually, we discover something terrible…birth order may have nothing to do with our children or how we treat our children and the expectations we have…that may be all us! AGHHHHHH!! Plus, Biz returns from the mountains and Theresa plays pretend.

Biz and Theresa wonder why it feels like it’s all or nothing when it comes to getting things — even fun things — done as a parent. Biz thinks we’re trapped between having to commit to being interrupted on the one hand, and being unable to carry out anything (project, work, or personal fun) on the other. Either way, we’re supposed to be "cool with it" because we are "mom." Eek- we may have stumbled on some more resentment here! Plus, Biz’s vacation will solve everything and Theresa is Commander-in-Chief of All That Is Baby!

Biz and Theresa admit that when we have those “what if I hadn’t done this or that” moments it may be tied to unrecognized guilt. Like most parenting guilt, while it isn’t true, it still feels bad, so is there any benefit to it? Biz and Theresa discuss our kids’ budding independence…or lack thereof and wonder how much we, as parents, are to blame for it. What do you mean ignoring our children's desire to do it themselves because we have no patience could be part of it? Weird. Plus, Biz is visited by the ghost of resolutions past and thank you notes, and Theresa “wuvs" baby talk.

Biz and Theresa realize that our childhood memories of the holidays combined with our visions of what we want our kid’s memories to be makes for one bad tasting fruit cake of guilt. The sensation that time is fleeting is really ramped up over the holidays, and we try to take a step back to focus on what is really important…presents for us! Plus Biz knows they aren’t doing it at her and Theresa has a house check in.

Biz and Theresa explore why it feels like being inside our homes sometimes makes us worse at parenting. Do we have shorter fuses and less patience because of the clutter and the never-ending list of chores that weigh us down when we're at home? Or...is there something "Amnityville Horror" going on? It's probably the clutter. Plus, Biz can’t remember anything, Theresa gets a visit from the Sleep Deprivation Fairy, and we get some incredibly helpful information and non-judgy tips from Dr. Cyrus Rangan at Poison Control.

Well, doesn’t it always melt down and don’t we want to be be proven right that we can’t do anything nice? UHG! Be it play dates, travel, staying up late or any other set of circumstances that usually go wrong with kids, maybe we should embrace the amazing feeling of the worst not happening. Don’t tell your sister but you are my favorite! Biz and Theresa talk about favoritism in our homes growing up and how we are trying to steer clear of it now that we're parents. We can at least agree that screaming “why can’t you be more like your brother” is probably a bad idea, right? It gets hard when we wrestle with feeling like we have to over-do to make each child feel they are getting enough attention, especially when they have such different needs. Plus Biz is visited by the demon mom spirit, Theresa has a gender rant, and we talk to early childhood development expert and author, Dr. Gloria Walther.
