One Bad Mother

Renée Colvert from the hit MaxFun podcast Can I Pet Your Dog? joins Biz to discuss the question, "Will having dogs prepare me for being a parent?" Is this question insulting, laughable, or does it actually hold some elements of truth? Maybe a little of all three! Plus, Biz discovers a new level of hell and Tugboat is in the house!

Thanks to everyone who supported us in this years Max Fun Drive!

Biz and Theresa fill our own boredom by talking about what to do when our kids are bored. Should we bust that boredom with 10 exciting ways to fill up summer break or just threaten to take their toys away if they are so bored? Both probably will have some sort of effect. The real question is how does it make us feel when we hear those 2 words, “I’m Bored,” from our kids? Plus Biz and Theresa never get bored of saying thank you to our listeners and supporters, and we talk to Shayna Ferm and Tracey Tee of the Pump and Dump Show about their new book Parentally IncorrectTrue Tales by Real Moms About the F**cked Up Things Their Kids Have Done.

Find out if the Pump and Dump show is coming to your town (they probably are) by visiting their website. Find them on Instagram @thepumpanddumpshow and on Twitter @thepumpanddump, and on their Facebook page AwestruckTV. Their book Parentally Incorrect. True Tales about the F**ked Up Things Their Kids Have Done is on sale now.

Biz and Theresa explore the art of bragging and decide this is a tough one. How can we teach our kids to have pride in their accomplishments while being mindful of the feelings of others? Instead of slapping the label “bragging” on it and walking away, what if we start with the lesson of being gracious towards others? Crap! That sounds like work! Plus, Biz brags about her garden, Theresa brags about her sick baby, and we get some information and resources about childhood stuttering from philanthropist and educator Jane Fraser.

Head to the Stuttering Foundation of America to find out more information about stuttering, Jane Fraser, and to download some of their awesome FREE resources. You can also follow the Stuttering Foundation on Twitter @stutteringfdn.

Biz and Theresa talk about how hard it is to watch our children deal with big disappointments, like missing their first sleepover because they’re sick! Not only do we want to comfort them, it also brings up our own crushing memories… “Mama! Why did you not buy me those Monkees tickets!!! WHY!!!??” The good news is this feels like a parenting situation we can handle. If we survived, it probably means our kids will too (…unless it’s Monkees tickets). Plus, Biz wonders if it’s real and Theresa is in a hell of her own making. Eek! This is not our most uplifting episode! But, we’re getting really good at this.

Don’t hang up yet, you’re just on hold! Biz and Theresa wonder if putting things on hold until [fill in the blank] is a good thing, and if perhaps it's better to just let some things go so that we can return to them when we're ready. Let's hold off on answering that. Plus, Biz is in the moment but not in the zone, Theresa says, "I’ll do it myself!" and we talk to award-winning children's book author and illustrator Airlie Anderson about her new book, Neither, which is a beautiful celebration of diversity and inclusion.

Biz and Theresa are in situations we'd only witnessed and judged in our pre-kid lives and are wondering, "How did we get here?" It's like the fog is clearing and once we can see everything we discover that we have no idea where we are. Are we “here” forever or is this just a stop on the road? Why is sleep the one issue that when our kids are having trouble, it feels like we are the ones with the problem? And how do we help older kids who suddenly won’t sleep through the night? Plus Biz works the streets, Theresa is someone, and sleep expert Dr. Jodi Mindell comes back to talk about sleep issues for older kids.

Biz and Theresa explore the saying, "Parenting is the toughest job, but also the most rewarding." What are those rewards and why don't they feel like finding a $20 bill in the couch? Is it that the language of “rewards” is misleading? Is it a long game? Is it that there are times when we are in too deep to see them? It may be all or none of these, but what might help is a trophy that says, “Reward.” I’ll take 20. Plus, Theresa has a one-year-old and Biz tries to adopt a new pet.

Kids love them, we hate them, and we admit to fully participating in the madness by buying them and giving them out at our own kids' parties. Maybe giving kids $1 when they leave the party is the cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to go! Plus, Biz lets go of something big, Theresa gives herself the silent treatment, and we talk with comedian and host of NPR’s Ask Me Another, Ophira Eisenberg, about having a baby later in life and letting the truths we set for ourselves be changeable.

You can catch Ophira's hilarious NPR show Ask Me Another every Friday. Don't forget to follow her on Twitter@OphiraE and definitely go watch her standup special Inside Joke.

Biz and Theresa are live from San Francisco Sketchfest with guest Eliza Skinner and we're talking about swear words! Our bread and butter! I guess maybe it's weird to hear a four-year-old sound like a sailor at the preschool interview? OOPS. Are some words just bad, is it more about how our kids reflect back on us, or is it just important that kids at least understand what they're saying and the effect their words might have on others? Maybe a little of all of the above. Plus, we enjoy some delightful audience genius and fails, and, of course, a collective listen to a mom having a breakdown.

Eliza Skinner is an excellent twitter person. You can watch Drop The Mic on TBS every Tuesday at 10 p.m. And don't forget to check out her awesome new podcast Cool Playlist where she invites a guest on to make a playlist for a specific life event. First episode to launch on January 30th!

Biz and Theresa wonder if there is anything to birth order as a determining factor in our personalities or if it's basically as reliable as astrological horoscopes? Does being the second child mean we shouldn’t leave the house today or make new investments? Yes, yes, it does. Actually, we discover something terrible…birth order may have nothing to do with our children or how we treat our children and the expectations we have…that may be all us! AGHHHHHH!! Plus, Biz returns from the mountains and Theresa plays pretend.

Biz and Theresa wonder why it feels like it’s all or nothing when it comes to getting things — even fun things — done as a parent. Biz thinks we’re trapped between having to commit to being interrupted on the one hand, and being unable to carry out anything (project, work, or personal fun) on the other. Either way, we’re supposed to be "cool with it" because we are "mom." Eek- we may have stumbled on some more resentment here! Plus, Biz’s vacation will solve everything and Theresa is Commander-in-Chief of All That Is Baby!

Like most parenting guilt, while it isn’t true, it still feels bad, so is there any benefit to it? Biz and Theresa discuss our kids’ budding independence…or lack thereof and wonder how much we, as parents, are to blame for it. What do you mean ignoring our children's desire to do it themselves because we have no patience could be part of it? Weird. Plus, Biz is visited by the ghost of resolutions past and thank you notes, and Theresa “wuvs" baby talk.

Biz and Theresa realize that our childhood memories of the holidays combined with our visions of what we want our kid’s memories to be makes for one bad tasting fruit cake of guilt. The sensation that time is fleeting is really ramped up over the holidays, and we try to take a step back to focus on what is really important…presents for us! Plus Biz knows they aren’t doing it at her and Theresa has a house check in.

Biz and Theresa explore why it feels like being inside our homes sometimes makes us worse at parenting. Do we have shorter fuses and less patience because of the clutter and the never-ending list of chores that weigh us down when we're at home? Or...is there something "Amnityville Horror" going on? It's probably the clutter. Plus, Biz can’t remember anything, Theresa gets a visit from the Sleep Deprivation Fairy, and we get some incredibly helpful information and non-judgy tips from Dr. Cyrus Rangan at Poison Control.

Well, doesn’t it always melt down and don’t we want to be be proven right that we can’t do anything nice? UHG! Be it play dates, travel, staying up late or any other set of circumstances that usually go wrong with kids, maybe we should embrace the amazing feeling of the worst not happening. Don’t tell your sister but you are my favorite! Biz and Theresa talk about favoritism in our homes growing up and how we are trying to steer clear of it now that we're parents. We can at least agree that screaming “why can’t you be more like your brother” is probably a bad idea, right? It gets hard when we wrestle with feeling like we have to over-do to make each child feel they are getting enough attention, especially when they have such different needs. Plus Biz is visited by the demon mom spirit, Theresa has a gender rant, and we talk to early childhood development expert and author, Dr. Gloria Walther.

This week on a spooky Halloween One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa discover that when our kids are out in public…being kids….everyone is watching! AHHHHH! Are our fears of being judged or that everyone is “over us already” real, or is the Jekyll to our Hyde trying to bust free and ruin everything? Plus Biz beats Halloween, Theresa is visited by a parenting ghost and we speak with Liz Sower of Ghosts in The Burbs.

Biz and Theresa share all the things that our kids take forever to do…put on shoes, eat, get out of the car, get into the car, really anything. Should we acknowledge the irony of all the times we say we wish we could slow down or that we wish the world for our kids would slow down while we complain about this? Nope! No time! Hurry up! We can’t teach you how to learn to be bored and to be patient when you are so slow! Sigh. We are getting really good at this? Plus Biz has more cake, Theresa gets ready for an adventure and we talk to Chris Harris author of I’m Just No Good At Rhyming: And Other Nonsense for Mischievous Kids and Immature Grown-ups.

Chris' book of poetry is out now!

Biz and Theresa explore the importance of picture day. Are we team “clean faced/hair brushed” or team “It was picture day?” Who cares the most about it, us or our children? What do we do with those pictures…mail them to relatives, frame them, or dump them in a file drawer? No matter what you do, the real meaning of picture day is to have something to embarrass our children with in 20 years. Plus Biz is forever in blue jeans, Theresa is the sleep president and we talk to Morra Aarons-Mele about her new book Hiding in the Bathroom: An Introvert’s Roadmap to Getting Out There (When You’d Rather Stay Home)

Pick up Morra's new book now and subscribe to her Forbes podcast Hiding in the Bathroom for more of a discussion around redefining success as an introvert.

Biz and Theresa wonder which is harder, having to be the more flexible person in the family with our work and personal needs, or adjusting our attitudes to be happy about it? How do we find the energy to adjust how we feel about it if we are always spending that energy being so freaking flexible!!? Which came first, the bitter chicken or the miserable egg? Maybe just talking it to death will help. Plus the walls are talking to Biz, Theresa made it and we talk to blogger and author Lee Wind about LGBTQ literature for young adults and children.

Check out Lee Wind's blog I'm Here. I'm Queer. What the hell do I read? for comprehensive lists of LGBTQ literature and follow him on Twitter @leewind.

Biz and Theresa wonder why it is so hard to get out of the house with kids. Oh, thats right…because everything. You’d think that after at least a few years, all the people in your house who need to get out of the house would accept that this is an event that happens and yet, when when you ask the 3 year old to get his shoes there is a very good chance he will return with rocks. Could it be that house-leaving related stress could be the seed for all parenting stress? Plus Biz gets the facts, Theresa is getting really good at this and we talk to Keli Garcia Allen about raising bilingual children.

You can check out some of Keli's thoughts about raising children in a bilingual household and learn more about the language learning app on the Learn Safari website.

Biz wonders if we are incapable of letting our children solve their own problems and if this is why our children can’t actually problem solve! Theresa suggests maybe its less about ability and more about personality. What’s worse, stunting our children's development or having to accept they may be totally different than you? Both seem like a reason to hide in the bathroom. Plus Biz gets thumb tacky, Theresa takes cover and we talk to Temple University professor and mother Dr. Ama Mazama about the growing trend and reasoning behind home schooling for African American children.

Check out Dr. Mazama in The Atlantic piece by Jessica Huseman that brought her to our attention and pick up her book The Afrocentric Paradigm to learn more about her field of study.

Biz and Theresa load up our backpacks with unnecessary anxiety! School is great and the teachers are better, so what could be keeping us up at night? Will the teacher be a good fit for our kid? Is this the REAL school supply list? We gotta get kids where? WHEN?! Does it count as bad communication from the school if we don’t read any of it? Should any of this be stressing us out? Theresa rolls with it while Biz lets her sadness for her ever aging children manifest itself into an unhealthy “yes!” Plus Biz has a screamer, Theresa goes to the beach, and we talk to Michael Ian Black about fatherhood, twitter, writing children's books, and Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later (in which he stars), which is streaming now on Netflix, to our endless delight!

Follow Michael on twitter @michaelianblack and don't forget to check out his latest children's book A Child's First Book of Trump and his hilarious new Netflix series Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later!

Biz and Theresa spend the show convincing ourselves that when our children whine it is a good thing. If we ignore the feeling of wanting to slam our heads into a wall and scream “my ears are bleeding! BLEEDING” and focus instead on the biological and emotional science of why children whine, we might just be successful. Success means hiding in the bathroom, right? Technically you are still in the house. Success! Plus Biz wants to know what’s happening, Theresa accepts her fate and we talk to Jennifer L. Verdolin, Phd about her new book Raised By Animals: The Surprising New Science of Animal Family Dynamics!

Biz and Theresa talk about all the little things we hate that we hadn't thought about in years....till our kids did them to us! Pool splashing, sparklers, being surprised...these aren't phobias or life-threatening but they still bug the crap out of us! So, do we ban them or toughen up? What if we just try to explain rationally to a three-year-old that we'd like them to stop? Yep! That will work! Plus, Biz sees herself in Katy Belle and Theresa returns from the woods!

This week on One Bad Mother, we are excited to share our live show from San Francisco (May 2017) where we talk about bad habits. What makes a bad habit and do we have any control over what habits our kids have? Probably not but that won’t stop Biz from trying to keep her child from becoming the class “booger eater.” Glynn Washington of Snap Judgement joins us and serves as the voice of reason and experience with his parenting perspective with older kids. We need it! Plus live genius and fails!

Note: This week corporal punishment is mentioned in the discussion.

You can listen to Glynn's program Snap Judgment on your local NPR affiliate stations or subscribe in your favorite podcatcher.

This week on One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa realize that all that glitters is not gold…it is just glitter and like that shitty tattoo you got from that wild night out that was fun but full of regrets the next morning, it will be with you forever. What makes glitter magical and why, despite knowing its dark side, do we keep letting it back into our house? Maybe, like all awful things, we can turn it into a reminder that we are getting really good at this. Plus, Biz brings Katy Belle to work and Theresa get summer schooled.

Biz and Theresa talk about playing games as children and now, with our own kids. We each have one capable, game-playing-age child as well as another child who seems to turn all game-playing experiences into hurricanes of frustration. Yet, we keep trying! Plus, we're joined by the delightful and insightful Anthonia Akitunde, founder of the website MaterMea.com, to talk about normalizing the experiences of women of color in motherhood.

This week on One Bad Mother, maybe you can’t understand what Biz and Theresa are saying because they bit off more than they can chew. While choking on it, they wonder why this keeps happening. Is it that we don’t see parenting as work so we take on more as if we are starting with a clean plate only to discover that there was a cake hiding under the salad the whole time? Plus Biz would like time to stop, Theresa is in too deep and we talk to returning guest Tresa Edmunds about her new self care venture HavenTree Box.

Biz and Theresa wonder what needs to happen, how much money it would take, how many magic wishes we’d need or who’s permission needs to be given for us to actually commit to self-care. Is 100 magic wishes enough? Maybe the actual self-care we are looking for isn’t a physical act, but instead an internal one. Or maybe we just need to go out for milk…in the Bahamas. Plus Biz is getting the band back together, Theresa can't get the splinter out and we talk to Erin Bried, founder and Editor in Chief of the awesome magazine for girls, Kazoo!

Biz and Theresa wonder if there is a person in the family who everything revolves around and if it is us, why do we keep getting hit by all those things in orbit? Does the family seem to revolve around one kid or does the focus tend to shift? Is this good, bad, or just another question there is no answer to? Plus Biz is happy about something, Theresa is losing her mind and we talk to Tae Won Yu about his awesome new book My First Baby Signs.

Biz and Theresa are beginning to think we aren’t using the word "selfish" right. Wanting time for yourself so you can rest isn’t the same thing as shoving someone out of the lifeboat. As we find ourselves digging into the idea of self-care more and more on the show, we try to figure out this week why it's hard to allow ourselves our own wants and desires. Plus Biz has an unimportant update, Theresa is getting messages and they're coming from within her bra, and we talk to Brett McKay about his book, The Art of Manliness, which, as it turns out, is helpful to parents and non-parents, regardless of gender!

Biz and Theresa wonder if there's any benefit to all the fighting going on between our kids besides thinning out the herd. One part of our brain knows to let them learn to work it out, unless it gets violent, but the other part of our brain finds it hard not to step in when we get fed up listening to it. Plus, Biz has a dream and Theresa practices detachment parenting. We talk to author, therapist and mom Colleen O’Grady about raising teen daughters, but our conversation is relevant to so many stages of parenting, it is absolutely something for everyone -- not just parents of teenage girls!

Biz and Theresa wonder if we're putting too much or too little weight on our kids' actual ages. Every time our older kids reach a new age, it seems younger than we imagined it would be, and our younger kids -- no matter how old they get -- always seem little compared to our big kids. When we set limits and expectations based on our kids' ages, it always somehow feels totally arbitrary! Plus, Biz acts like she cares, Theresa solves the formula, and we talk to actresses and moms Kimmy Gatewood and Rebecca Johnson about Glow, the new Netflix series about lady wrestlers.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Biz and Theresa wonder whether we have inadvertently allowed ourselves to become doormats! When we hear our partners tell our kids, "Don't talk to your mother that way," why are we surprised? It's nice to know someone has our backs, but...maybe we should also have our own backs! How do we practice patience while also standing up to our kids when they cross the line? How do we stand up to ourselves when we treat ourselves badly? Plus, Biz spends money on garbage and Theresa would like to stop having kids now!

Biz and Theresa are beginning to think our kids are trying to tell use something…like, to shut up. Perhaps the face grabbing, mouth covering and screaming, “No talking, Mama!” is a clue. Is expecting our children to not interrupt reasonable right now or should we be focusing more on the long game? Plus, Biz adjusts her attitude, there is a baby on Theresa’s plane, and Heather MacLean joins to talk about her new YA book, Toward a Secret Sky and her experiences as a mom with a child with Tourette's.

Every family has its own way of doing things and, now that our kids are old enough to compare our homes to their friends', suddenly there's a whole list of ways in which we, our kids' parents, ARE MONSTERS. Plus, Biz paves the way for weekend fun and Theresa visits a real forest. And we talk with writer Nefertiti Austin about her experience adopting children as a single woman of color.

In reference to our conversation with Nefertiti, here are some book recommendations from Gwen Glazer of the New York Public Library. These books are for children ages 10+, featuring protagonists who are people of color. Note these are categorized by gender -- the first listed are books featuring boy/male leads and below that are books featuring girl/female leads. As with any book, parents should read first to make sure it is suitable for your child. Thank you, Gwen!

Featuring boy/male leads:

As Brave as You by Jason Reynolds (Nefertiti after the show found this as well through her local librarian)
The Crossover and Booked by Kwame Alexander (these might skew older -- for a mature 10yo only)
The Cruisers series by Walter Dean Myers
Kinda Like Brothers by Coe Booth
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

Featuring girl/female leads:

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smit
Bayou Magic by Jewell Parker Rhodes
The Jumbies series by Tracy Baptiste
The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis
Zora and Me by Victoria Bond

This week on One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa ponder the stereotype of mothers….not the ethereal, magical vessel image…its the hunched, broken, shell of a person image. Is it avoidable? Is it too late? Or is there some place in between the deep end and the impossible vision of self put upon perfection? We hope that place has snacks. Plus Biz lives her parenting dream, Theresa gives us a window into her world and we talk to Bryn Huntpalmer of the podcast The Birth Hour.

This week on One Bad Mother, Biz and Theresa wonder why stepping foot into elementary school can churn up our own personal anxiety about making friends as adults with other parents. Is it all in our minds or should we just hang out behind the cafeteria and start smoking? Plus Biz gives up the bottle, Theresa takes up the bottle and Kiera Butler, a senior editor at Mother Jones joins to talk about the silence surrounding birth related injuries.

This week on One Bad Mother, in honor of the #MaxFunDrive, Theresa is BACK, with Baby Curtis, and we talk about the miracle of childbirth. The third times the charm! Plus we are joined by Jancee Dunn, to talk about her new book which works through the issues many couples have after a baby shows up in their life. Turns out, there maybe should have been some pre-baby talk about how stuff was going to work. Weird. This week on One Bad Mother, in honor MaxFunDrive, Biz travels to the past to talk to to still pregnant Theresa about how much they should care about how their kid’s express themselves through their clothes. The answer turns out to be “not a lot” but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bumpy road to get there and acceptance that the road will go on forever….with more bumps. Plus Corin Tucker joins us to talk about “mom cool,” feminism post kids and the importance of supporting each other.

This week on One Bad Mother, Tempest DuJour joins Biz as co-host to answer the question "What do you mean they don’t want to be your friend baby girl?” What are we supposed to do as parents if our kids feel like they don’t have friends? I mean besides threaten those kids who dare not like our children. That probably qualifies as getting “too involved.” But what is enough involvement and how bitter is that pill to swallow that there really isn’t anything you can do to keep your children from emotional pain? Plus we call Theresa and we announce our first LIVE show in San Francisco!

This week on One Bad Mother, while Theresa is out on family leave, Biz is joined by her husband Stefan Lawrence to talk about the language of love. Or maybe its the language of Swedish and the love part comes from staying married while one parent speaks only English and the other only Swedish to the kids. Does it get frustrating? Does it take patience? Does it take commitment? Yes…and Stefan finds it challenging too. Plus Stefan Hotdogs the intro and Biz wants to was on down the road that takes her away from the school talent show.

This week on One Bad Mother, Theresa has had a baby! Yay! Biz is joined by guest host Britt Erickson and they wonder why kid’s have such a problem with what we know to be true and instead cling to their alternative facts…and why are they so stubborn about it? Its the kids being stubborn right? Not us…right? Plus we are joined by Meg Collins of Lucie’s List to talk about the importance of being honest about what to really expect when you’re expecting.

Biz and Theresa talk candy! Is there such a thing as too much candy and really, for whom are we asking? Between school celebrations, holidays, and parties, there seems to be a never-ending flow of candy into our lives. Do we try to control the candy or just use candy to control our kids? If it gets us out the door quickly, we’ll choose the latter! Plus, we talk about dinner time and picky eaters with the very enjoyable team from the Spilled Milk podcast, Molly Wizenberg and Matthew Amster-Burton.

Biz and Theresa take a walk in a winter wonderland of HORRORS! Is there something special about the winter weather that makes it seem harder to parent? Or is it being trapped inside more? Maybe its all the holidays, snow days, and sick days that make it seem impossible to get anything done? Or maybe Biz and Theresa are just displacing our own parenting ennui on a season. Plus, Biz pulls the plug on swimming, Theresa is still pregnant, and we talk to Jenny Jaeckel about her new graphic novel Spot 12: Five Months in the Neonatal ICU.

Biz and Theresa talk about gender identity and our kids this week as Theresa shares some news about her five-year-old. Our awesome guest is Gender Spectrum's Lisa Kenney, who co-authored the book The Transgender Teen. Lisa walks us through some common misconceptions about gender identity and helps us learn language that can be useful around discussions of gender. Plus, Biz discovers how the little things can be so much more aggravating than the big things, and Theresa...is still pregnant!

Biz and Theresa wonder if we're doing it wrong when it comes to responding to poor behavior. Should we be accommodating of difficult behavior when it's obviously just some kind of developmental stage? Or, by letting things slide, are we creating a world of Veruca Salts? Is it okay to just not enlist in some battles? Plus, Biz experiences the power of The Target Shout-Out and Theresa stresses about giving equal attention to her kids.

Biz and Theresa say, "facts schmacts!” Of course sugar makes kids hyper! Who cares if science says otherwise? Of course drool plus fever means teething! No matter that your kid has all her teeth- IT'S TEETHING! Astrology? Ha! Your attempts to deny its accuracy just prove you are a (insert your sign here). Okay, okay, all joking aside, science really is the best. We explore the difference between the “gut truths” that aren’t harmful to anyone and the truths that must be recognized as facts in order to keep us all safe. Plus, Biz is forgetting her homework, Theresa's kids team up for trouble, and we talk to the very cool and very honest Minna Dubin, founder of #MomLists.

Biz and Theresa think back to what life was like when we were just passengers in the cars of life and are fairly certain there was no way we were distracting to our parents. We then impress each other with our feats of managing small children while driving…who knew you could open granola bars and pitch them over your head perfectly to land in your toddler’s mouth? Plus, Biz fears the new year and Theresa gobbles up the good times!

The holidays are here! Biz and Theresa head into the festive season wondering: if we say what concerns us and ask for help and the opportunity to actually enjoy at least some of it... maybe we actually will? If that doesn’t work, there's always #HidingInTheBathroom. Plus, Biz says goodbye to the ant and the stroller, Theresa is faced again with one of the great questions of the universe, and we talk to the very funny and very grounded Carla Naumburg, PhD, author of Ready, Set, Breathe: Practicing Mindfulness With Your Children for Fewer Meltdowns and a More Peaceful Family.

Biz and Theresa wonder if everyone deserves a trophy or if the cut-and-dry world of "1st, 2nd and 3rd Place" make us stronger. Maybe just the act of having to explain winning and losing to our kids makes us strong enough. Plus, Biz takes it offline, Theresa runs away to the woods, and we get some help from Theresa’s mom, Marriage Family Therapist Beth Hossfeld, on how to go on parenting when we're scared or dealing with crisis.

You've heard of the "'tween" years, but Biz and Theresa think there's another awkward in-between time that comes earlier and doesn't get as much attention. Those years after infancy but before total kid autonomy...Why didn’t anyone tell us they would be a little repetitive and boring…I mean magical in their own unique way? Plus Biz starts camp early, Theresa stops getting out of her chair and we talk to Seattle based writer Ijeoma Oluo about embracing being wrong.

Biz and Theresa talk about our decisions to stop having kids and how even these supposedly settled matters can leave us feeling uncertain. Oh and don’t forget, life can always laugh in our faces and find a way to remind us that we don't necessarily have the power to control the outcome of our decisions! Plus, Biz is scared of Halloween, Theresa looks great, and we talk to the queen of children’s music, Laurie Berkner.

Biz and Theresa explore how we try to change gears when we're stuck in a funk. “I know I am supposed to be enjoying this moment… why can’t I get out of my funk and enjoy it?” Is it the guilt, is it the need to carry every emotional triumph or difficulty around till we get recognized for it, or do we just need to be nicer to ourselves when a day is turned upside down by a toddler tantrum? It may be some of everything. Plus, Biz has an ant problem, Theresa has bunk beds, and we talk to drag superstar Tempest DuJour about adoption, trusting yourself, and fostering diversity in our homes and communities.

Biz and Theresa discuss how major schedule changes, like dropping naps, later bedtimes, and new morning routines, are natural and unavoidable...not to mention mildly traumatic for us. Is it strange that our kids can roll with these changes better than we can? Nope. They don’t rely on a set schedule to organize their lives like we do! Plus, Biz feels all alone, Theresa is still pregnant, and we talk to Janet Stickmon about her essay series To Black Parents Visiting Earth: A Love Letter-Life Guide to Raising Black Children in the 21st Century.

Biz and Theresa explore all the ways in which transitions from crib to big-kid bed can make us crazy. From spending all evening by your child's bed making sure they don't get up to super-nanny-style walking your kid back to bed 10,000 times a night to just plain keeping that crib around long past its welcome, there are dozens of ways to handle toddler bedtime shenanigans and we have yet to meet the parent that finds any of it relaxing. Plus, Biz wonders if all kids go through a "rude" phase, Theresa continues to re-learn that she can't leave her kids alone for five seconds, and we get some advice on personal finance from the lovely Helaine Olen, author, Slate columnist, and contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and more.

Watch your step! Biz and Theresa are talking about milestones this week. From those developmental ones like walking and talking to the more emotional ones like getting a big-kid bed or the first day of school, we explore the ways in which milestones can make us feel stressed, relieved, judgmental, and worried -- sometimes all at once! Plus, Biz does not want Ellis’s popcorn and Theresa has a dirty mouth.

Biz and Theresa wonder who really gets punished when we take away fun things like TV, iPads, toys and special outings? (Short answer: US!) What's so hard about this? Is it just the realization that we now have to fill that time in a different way, or is there something amiss in the way we're doling out punishments in the first place? Plus, Biz gets recognized for her efforts and Theresa gets lazy!

Biz and Theresa talk about the things we do for our kids that we'd otherwise never do. Whether you're an introvert spending Saturday socializing at a playdate, you're someone with a balloon phobia blowing up balloons for your kid's party because she HAD to have balloons, or you're the least crafty person on earth but you wake up one morning in the middle of Michael's with your five-year-old and a cart full of pinata-making materials -- we've all pushed ourselves to do things for the sake of our kids. Do we gain from these experiences or are we losing ourselves in this process?  Plus, Biz gets body-technical, Theresa ups her fashion game, and we talk to the delightful Chris Kornelis about his truly very cool new book, Rocking Fatherhood: The Dad-to-Be’s Guide to Staying Cool.

Biz wants a new job, one where she isn’t President of All The Stuff. In any relationship, is it inevitable that one person becomes the boss of a majority of day-to-day stuff? Is it resentment that we can feel over this arrangement, or just fatigue? Regardless, it seems like sometimes we just want someone else to be the boss….BUT, OH NO….can we let go of being President? Maybe we just need to be the President of Venting. Plus, Theresa has a big announcement and we talk to Angela Arsenault, Features Editor at Parent.co, about teens and sex in the digital age.

Biz and Theresa deal with our kids breaking rules and just being generally "sneaky." We thought it would be cute, a rite of passage for all kids, but - surprise - it turns out it's not as fun when it's happening in your own house. Plus, there's something fishy going on with one of Biz's family's pet fish, Theresa's kids delight in the fruits of their of sneakiness, and we talk about infertility with actor, photographer, and all-around amazing woman Tracey B. Wilson, whose video about her own experience is incredibly honest.

Biz and Theresa demand to know why our kids don’t like some stuff that ALL OTHER kids seem to like. Not liking pizza or coloring books seems like breaking some sort of child law and it seems particularly criminal when the things they don’t like would make it easier for the parent if they just liked it! Plus Biz is at her breaking point and naming every person in a book or car on the road for her toddler isn’t helping, Theresa has an unfortunate wildlife adventure and Courtney Wyckoff of Momma Strong comes back to talk postpartum peeing and issue us a pelvic floor challenge!

Biz and Theresa wonder if we're overstepping our boundaries when our kids' friends ask us questions about the way the world works or need our help solving a problem. Are we "parenting" other people's kids, or is this just what they mean when they say, "It takes a village!" Plus, Biz is inconsistent in her feminist teachings, Theresa's kids are taking "dress up" to a new level, and we talk with author, activist, UC Berkeley faculty, and mom Aya de Leon, about how to talk with our young kids about racism, inequality, and activism.

Biz and Theresa get down to the nitty-gritty of sibling bedroom-sharing: fighting, space-sharing, sleep schedules, and more! Biz is afraid to try it with her kids and Theresa knows no other way. Plus, Biz is cooking beautiful meals for her children to reject and Theresa has been whined at one too many times. And we get a wonderful and very informative visit from Gwen Glazer, Recommendations Librarian at New York Public Library and one of the hosts of The Librarian Is In podcast.

Biz and Theresa are glad to be back from vacation and are ready to talk Kid Hangovers! Can they be cured by hair of the hotdog? Is there any way to help our kids recover from a night at Nana’s or the Chuck E Cheese birthday party or is this where they have to gain insight from experience? Either way, comparing this process to a hangover makes it less painful. Plus, we talk with Julie Falatko, author of the delightful children’s book Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask To Be In This Book) about getting work done with four kids and the importance of giving yourself permission to do it.

Biz and Theresa discuss the emotional roller coaster that is parenting a two-year-old. Our kids are often intense, clingy, loving, and on the verge of a tantrum. It takes all our energy to stay calm in the face of the hurricane (and let's get real - plenty of times we don't stay calm, and that takes energy too)! Plus, Biz is losing her mind over Band-Aids, Theresa is losing her mind over sunscreen, and no guest this week means we have ample time to indulge in the many ways we're losing our minds over our bananas two-year-olds! You're welcome, guys! Happy 4th! We'll be back in two weeks!

This episode was recorded live at MaxFunCon on June 12th! We're talking slumber parties this week so it's time to freeze someone's bra and practice the occult while levitating a friend and not waking up anybody's parents! Plus, Biz is unsettled by the quiet of being away from her kids, Theresa is exhausted from traveling with her kids, and we're joined by singer-songwriter, podcaster and Third Sexiest Man of Seattle 2006, the very funny and charming John Roderick!

Biz and Theresa discuss our love for our kids' artistic creations and our simultaneous exasperation at the sheer volume of it. We explore ways to throw stuff out without traumatizing anyone! Plus, Biz has a Shopkins update and Theresa has a kindergarten breakdown. And we talk to the genius behind Theresa's all-time favorite children's book, Who Needs Donuts?, Mark Alan Stamaty!

Biz feels like she used to do many things well but now seems to do many things poorly. We explore this very real place and how much it sucks! Plus, Biz turns to boxes for comfort, Theresa has emotions about her kids’ hair, and we talk to the creators of the inspiring blog RaiseAMother.com!

It's the week after Memorial Day and you know what that means! Time for another episode of One Bad Mother devoted entirely to your most epic listener calls. Join us as we celebrate everyone from the dad who cooked a needlessly elaborate meal because his fussy two-year-old was in a playdoh trance to the mom who somehow managed to hair-spray herself in the face while trying to compliment her children! Plus, the rants get REAL this week. And Biz reminds us that sometimes society's expectations for parents are contradictory and all we can do is try our best and have compassion for one another. Thanks to all our listeners for providing such amazing content for our show this week and every week! You're all doing an amazing job.

Biz and Theresa get honest about bribing our kids. It's the thing you're not really supposed to do but it seems like everyone kind of does and -- dare we say -- it maybe kind of sort of...WORKS! Eek! Call the parenting judgment police! But, how far can we go with bribery before it backfires? Plus, Biz hits a major milestone with her toddler and Theresa tries not to feel guilty when she realizes she's having quality time with her second child for the first time in months.

Biz and Theresa ask if "parenting karma" is real and if just by saying something good is happening with sleep, eating, potty training….anything…you will JINX it and whatever was good will be bad. Just to be safe….let's say it is true. Plus, Biz doesn't know what actually is easier, Theresa’s kids are clutter prodigies, and we talk to Margot Black, author of Where’s My Award! How to Get Baby Barf out of a Red Carpet  & Other Tales from a Working Mom in Hollywood.

Biz and Theresa try to remember what we thought being an adult was going to be like when we were kids and wonder if we lived up to those expectations. Well, Biz did eat three boxes of fruit roll ups because “she could” so that was something! We also discuss what we may or may not be able to do to help our kids become adults. Surprise! It probably involves work. Plus Biz goes on a field trip, Theresa tries to talk about something nice, and we call Dr. Dan Siegel, co-author of The Whole Brain Child, to talk about how we can help ourselves and our kids by considering how our brains work.
